Netflix Unveils Upcoming Documentary on Country Music Star Tim McGraw Titled “Southern Grace”

Netflix has officially announced the release of a powerful new documentary about country music icon Samuel Timothy McGraw, simply known to millions as Tim McGraw.

Titled Southern Grace, the documentary will premiere globally on December 12, 2025, offering a deep dive into the life, legacy, and enduring influence of the American country music legend and actor. The project has been described as a “celebration of resilience, roots, and rhythm,” chronicling McGraw’s rise from humble beginnings to global superstardom.

Tim McGraw, who has released 17 studio albums, 10 of which have topped the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, rose to fame in the 1990s with hits like Don’t Take the Girl, Live Like You Were Dying, and his 1994 breakout album Not a Moment Too Soon, which became the best-selling country album of that year.

The Netflix documentary explores McGraw’s early life in Louisiana, his complicated relationship with baseball legend Tug McGraw (his father), and the fire that pushed him to pursue country music against all odds.

Southern Grace features a rich ensemble of voices, including Faith Hill (his wife and fellow country star), Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift, and even actors like Matthew McConaughey who worked with McGraw during his Hollywood crossover. These interviews paint a vivid portrait of McGraw’s personal struggles, family values, and his efforts to balance fame with authenticity. Rare home videos and behind-the-scenes tour footage offer fans a personal look at the man behind the music.

One of the documentary’s standout aspects is its original soundtrack, featuring remastered classics such as Where the Green Grass Grows, Something Like That, and My Next Thirty Years. Additionally, Netflix has confirmed that new recordings and unreleased acoustic demos from McGraw’s personal vault will be included, along with tribute performances by contemporary artists like Luke Combs and Lainey Wilson. The music weaves through the narrative, showcasing McGraw’s evolving sound and emotional depth.

Thematically, Southern Grace explores more than music, it examines McGraw’s battle with alcohol, his commitment to physical fitness, and how he reshaped the country genre with a blend of southern grit and modern emotion. The film also takes a thoughtful look at his marriage with Faith Hill, not just as a romantic partnership but as a cultural powerhouse that influenced millions. Their bond is presented as both inspirational and grounded in mutual respect and hard work.

Directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Rachel Morrison, the documentary uses cinematic storytelling to highlight the duality of McGraw’s public persona and private introspection. His film roles in Friday Night Lights and 1883 are also discussed, revealing a man unafraid to challenge his limits both musically and dramatically. Morrison said, “Tim’s story is one of the American dream—flawed, complex, but ultimately triumphant.”

As December 12, 2025 approaches, Southern Grace is already building strong buzz across social media and country music circles. Netflix aims to deliver not just a documentary, but an emotional experience that resonates with longtime fans and newcomers alike. Whether you grew up with his music or are just now discovering the soul behind the southern twang, Southern Grace promises to be a moving tribute to one of country music’s most beloved and enduring stars.
