In a positive turn of events, Kiah Reed—daughter of motocross legend Chad and Ellie Reed—has successfully undergone spine fusion surgery after sustaining serious back injuries in a recent practice crash. The procedure went well, and Kiah is now in recovery with full movement and a strong outlook for a full recovery.
While pain management has been a challenge, Kiah’s sense of humor hasn’t wavered. In a lighthearted moment post-surgery, she joked with her brothers by blurting out, “The doctor said I need a backiotomy!”—bringing laughter and relief to her family during a tough time.
Kiah has been fitted for a back brace to help remind her not to get too active too quickly, but her spirit remains unshaken. The Reed family expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support from friends, fans, and the motocross community around the world.
Ellie Reed posted on social media, About 8 hrs post-surgery as I type this.
Most important—everything went well! In a nutshell, she had a spinal fusion.
Pain can be tough to manage post-surgery, coming off anesthesia, pain meds wearing off, etc. So she was feeling pretty rough on and off all afternoon.
She was given some morphine—we have been staying away from anything heavy, but it was needed at the time. So she got a little bit funny from the meds.
Tate was standing over her, and she was sleeping peacefully, and then she started pulling all these funny faces. Tongue out , eyes rolling, trying to freak her brother out or make him laugh—both applied.
She yells out, “The doctor said I need a backiotomy!”
& Tate lost it with laughter—he came to get Pace, who then stood at her bedside laughing along too.
She is the light of the family. The joy , the funny , the happy. Laughter heals all things. The boys got to see their sister’s normal, funny ways for a bit, and for a minute they stopped worrying.
We got to chat for a bit about riding , about the incident, and about normal things.
These are the healing moments for all involved. ❤️
She’s hurting for sure, and it’s rough between pain meds wearing off. But her spirit is well, and every day she’ll get stronger and better. She got fitted for a brace today; that’s the cast picture. She is stable after the surgery, but they wanted her to have one as a reminder not to get too active too quickly.
Thank you all for the love and support—the messages from all over the world are incredible.
It means so much to our family. The love she has surrounding her is magical. Thank you all so much. ❤️❤️
I might get myself some sleep too! My kids have never had to have surgery before. Kiah had never even broken a bone before, so it was a lot at once!
Onwards and upwards, Kiah. Healing time for that backiotomy! ❤️❤️ *She has full movement and will make a full recovery! It really is Good Friday. 🙌🏼
